Review of Top Five (2014) by David S — 20 Mar 2015
A prediction: there will be a lot more sex in this movie than in 50 Shades of Grey. Which is not what you expect from a Chris Rock movie. Come to think of it, what do you expect from a Chris Rock movie? Rock is an atypical movie star, he rarely looks comfortable on camera, and in 15 years hasn't made much of an impression.
Until now. While the movie is imperfect, it is funny. Rock is clearly influenced by Woody Allen, but the story of a comedian who wants to be taken seriously hearkens back to Preston Sturges's Sullivan's Travels.
Top Five isn't on that level, but it's a whole lot better than, say, Grown Ups 2. Which in a weak year for comedies is something to be thankful for.
