Review of Tootsie (1982) by Dave H — 12 May 2009
A little dated in its gender politics now, but a sweet, smart and very funny examination of a man discovering the best in himself my pretending to be a woman. Exquisite writing - structure and dialogue are spot on.
Awesome perfs all around, Murray (You slut!) and Pollack are standouts. Not as outrageous now in light of Mrs. Doubtfire's antics, but perhaps even more tender. Probably the first film I ever saw at the cinema that was targeted above 25 years olds too.
And still genius. "Sandy thinks I'm gay, Julie thinks I'm a lesbian...".
