Review of Tony Manero (2008) by Patricio V — 11 Apr 2009
'This is how the world ends.' I liked it. It's not entertaining. Tony Manero is about a man who actively and passively destroys his life (everyone in it). It may also be about Chile, its history and politics, though that is contained in allegory and contextual passages.
It is not a great film if you focus on the latter (though it is affective, effective). It is a great film if you follow the former. I have never seen tragedy quite so truthfully executed in the cinema.
It's poetic, disturbing. I don't understand why it's been branded a comedy - perhaps it is and, like an Israeli comedy, a product of its society, history. But I only found humour after catharsis.
Yes, perfectly, poetically executed tragedy. Not entertaining.
