Quite a bizarre tale, I wonder where the inspriation for this character came from. Highly recommended if you're a lover of original stories. It definately had a socialist atmosphere to the film not unlike some eastern european films i've seen, surprising as it is as far from Eastern Europe as you can get.
I'm a bit baffled by the river in Santiago. When I was there in 2009 it was a talking point as it was barely a stream yet in this film it was gushing rapids. very odd.
