Review of Toni Erdmann (2016) by Joey B — 21 Apr 2017
Comical, uncomfortable, very current, very female perspective. An overall story about an über busy corporate type 30'ish straight woman who works for an oil company helping smooth over their corporate asses when lay-offs of hundreds of workers occur, and she travels the world constantly.
She rarely gets to her native country of Germany and both her mother and father (they've been divorced for a long time) hardly ever get to see her. Circumstances occur that cause her father to begin to intrude himself into her life - both personally and professionally - and the results are both incredibly odd and funny as they are heartfelt and lovely.
One of the best comedies I've ever seen not just from Germany (rare), but from anywhere. Written and directed by a woman, this daughter-father story is a real treat. Brilliant.
