Review of To Have and Have Not (1945) by Scott S — 06 May 2009
To Have and Have Not (1944) -- [6.5] -- Even though it's based on Hemingway, the situation and all the characters blatantly mirror "Casablanca". They even have a fat guy playing the Sydney Greenstreet role and a mousy guy playing the Peter Lorre role.
It's weird. But as far as rip-offs go, it's actually okay. The single greatest thing about this movie, by a mile, is Lauren Bacall's film debut. (This is the movie with her famous line, "You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together and blow.
") She delivers a remarkably controlled, flirtatious performance. She is gorgeous and beguiling, the embodiment of sex here. To see the movie for her is reason enough.
