Review of To Die For (1995) by Nathaniel I — 30 Jul 2007
Nicole Kidman stars, but is supported by an amazing, if not underrated cast of co-stars including the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Casey Affleck, Illena Douglas, etc. in this archetypical tale of a total "femme fatale".
With Matt Dillon playing her simple, yet loving husband Kidman's character, Suzanne Stone lives what many would consider the "American dream". She has a wonderful husband, a decent career of her own, and a great family.
However when the life she once desired begins to hold her back from her own growing ambitions, she decides to do something about it. After suducing and manipulating poor 16 yr-old James (Phoenix), she convinces him the only way they can be together is if he kills her dead-weight husband.
You can surely imagine what happens next. However, Gus Van Sant takes you on a wild emotional rollercoaster. Instead of just being part of the audience, you feel like you are living in the movie. Like, you're watching this car-wreck happen before your eyes.
In the end, despite points where you might grunt or become frustrated, you're left totally vindicated.
