Review of Titus (1999) by Lenin C — 16 Jul 2008
A masterful rendering of Shakespeare's most unjustly (and perhaps only) criticized play. Makes full use of both the tragic and farcical potential inherent in the text. And visually stunning. Captures the feel via a fusion of different periods--from Fascist Italy to gladiatorial Rome to Olive Garden.
Dazzling score. A classic tale of man's inhumanity to man--and one that brings us down to it's level--for aren't we clamoring for Demetrius and Chiron's deaths by the end? Despite the cycle of pitiless bloodletting? Still, director Julie Taymor ends on hope, with a cliched but effective sunrise.
