Review of Titus (1999) by Johnathon W — 20 Aug 2011
Visually innovative adaptation of the Shakespeare play, thanks in large part to a superb cast and, for the most part, successful directorial debut by Julie Taymor. Hopkins & Lange are their usual excellence, though it's Harry Lennix who stills the show as Aaron, a villain so evil you almost like him.
Taymor's visual flourishes work for the most part as well, thanks to some gorgeous production, but does go a bit overboard at times (something she hasn't shaken off since). Plus, this being one of Shakespeare's early plays, it is also not one of it's best, with plot & characterizations that don't quite make sense.
You see the beginnings of greatness, especially in establishing the arch-types for his classic characters of King Lear, Lady MacBeth & Iago, but the Bard wasn't quite the genius yet. Nevertheless, an enjoyable movie and for Shakespeare fans, a fine addition to your library.
