Review of Tideland (2005) by Aidan H — 23 Aug 2008
What is it with these middle-aged directors and their weird fixation with little girls' imaginations? Both Gilliam and fellow Alice lover Tim Burton offer us these dress-up box dream sequences that are supposed to be interesting but seldom do more than offer us a glimpse into their own twisted view of innocence.
Personally, I have absolutely no interest in the fantasy life of abused children and the inclusion of heroin addiction and dysfunctional parenting didn't make it any more contemporary or meaningful.
This scream-inducing tsunami of tedious girlyness had me reaching for the remote about half an hour in. Gilliam picketed cinemas to get people to see this and no wonder - there is no way most people would buy a ticket otherwise.
For fans of the equally execrable Pan's Labyrinth only. 1 star for the precocious talent of the young lead.
