Review of Thunderball (1965) by William B — 17 Dec 2008
A letdown after the spectacular GOLDFINGER, but still an entertaining movie. The meetings of both SPECTRE and the "double ohs" are both exciting in a kinda creepy way, and Adolfo Celi plays a suitably scary bad guy.
On the downside, you get the impression that, much of the time, they're working without a script-- Bond just kinda walks from one fight scene to another, and it's worth noting that he's only really involved because he happened to notice a man with a strange tattoo-- not the kind of intense undercover work we'd expect.
And the underwater footage-- which must have seemed groundbreaking in its day-- isn't nearly so impressive in 2008, so it's too bad they apparently devoted most of their budget to these effects (to the point that we aren't treated to the beautiful location shots found in GOLDFINGER or, later, A QUANTUM OF SOLACE).
