Review of Thunderball (1965) by Andrew C — 13 Jan 2009
It is here, with Sean Connery's fourth James Bond film that the scale exploded. Not to the point of extreme unlikeliness mind you. It is the longest running James Bond film thus far and it does make good with the size. Beautiful underwater photography is one of the most striking aspects of this film as is the scenary. Taking place, mostly, in the Bahamas, Thunderball tells the tale of a classic villain doing the old school bits of villainy including holding the world hostage and feeding people to his pet tiger sharks. Here we have yet another classicly styled villain, accent, eyepatch and silver haired. Also we have James Bond's first serious piece of bad news coming from a lady. That's right, our first Bond villainess as played by Luciana Paluzzi. First lady I've seen to shake Bond's nerves in the slightest. Here, however, is a representation of love at first sight, from me anyway. Claudine Auger, wow. Guys, hell even ladies, will without a doubt, quickly fall in love too. It might be the film's opening 10 mins that leave me pause and a bit bored. That doesn't last very long though when Bond starts kicking some serious ass. There's the classic Connery style suavery (and if that's not a word it fuckin' A should be) Also, on a note of critisisim, not sure how much I liked Tom Jones' song. Anyway...
Peace!
