Review of Thunderball (1965) by Dean M — 31 Mar 2012
Bond gets wet in another action blockbuster that is apparently the most successful Bond of all time.
On first viewing I did find the underwater sequences a bit slow and overplayed but now I see them as a absolute highlight. At times it almost looks like a ballet in wetsuits, but when you consider the difficulties in filming it is an absolute triumph of movie making. You do have to ask though, do punches underwater really require sound fx?
My only real gripe is with the editing. Speeding up the film to increase the action just looks ridiculous. The scene where the Disco Volante is out of control is completely laughable as it appears to reach speeds of a jet fighter. I wish they would release a version with no speed enhancements.
A great action film with the added bonus of Bond doing the Bond girl underwater.
