Review of Throne of Blood (1957) by The Phantom C — 15 Mar 2013
Toshiro Mifune's best performance in a samurai movie may be his portrayal of Washizu, the "MacBeth" figure in "Kumonosu jo" ("Spider's Web Castle"). His wide eyes betray the character's fear and uncertainty even as he ruthlessly seizes the throne of a local lord and rages against real and perceived enemies.
The supernatural creepiness of the MacBeth story is on vivid display here through the appearance of ghosts and prophecies. The ending is unforgettable and may be the best death scene Kurosawa ever filmed, as well as the most violent.
