Review of Thoroughbreds (2018) by Matthew D — 30 Aug 2018
I warned you.
A mad modern thriller for teenagers.
Thoroughbreds is one of 2018's best films. It is what happens when you cross breed Ingrid Goes West with Fargo. It takes on the psychotic tone of American Psycho while contemplating on the themes of empathy and apathy. It is thoughtful, creative, and astounding. Cory Finley wrote and directed an unsettling slow burn with Thoroughbreds.
Acting-wise, Olivia Cooke kills it as the emotionless Amanda just looking for a friend. Anya Taylor-Joy murders it as the apathetic rich girl Lily. These two ladies lead Thoroughbreds on a disquieting meditation on the meaning of life. They are both compelling as anti-heroes or even villains if you will. I love how mature their performances view as they both have bright acting careers.
Notably, the step-father character Mark, played so creepily by Paul Sparks, is so odd in his strange daily life as a rich step-dad. Sparks does a fantastic job emoting his disdain for his daughter. I must also mention Anton Yelchin is frightening as Tim. Yelchin really gave it all in what would turn out to be his final performance, unfortunately. Rest in peace, Anton Yelchin. Thank you for your acting.
Musically, Thoroughbreds switches between total silence to erratic rhythms drums and dissonant sounds. Erik Friedlander did a nice job composing a disturbing and tense score. His score certainly adds to Thoroughbreds' suspense.
Overall, this is a movie that will disturb and bother you. If you are prepared for that kind of experience, Thoroughbreds is a thriller filled with suspense. Whatever you decide, I warned you.
