Review of This Is England (1941) by Prithviraj P — 28 Feb 2010
I dont even remember why I didnt write anything about this movie when I first watched it(it was a long time back)....I believe I was held back by the thought that whether my review would express what I needed to speak about it.
Even now this is sort of a thanks note to a certain friend(YES Becks, Thank you for telling me & thank Bridget jones....lol) for recommending this film.
When I first saw the film I thought may be it's a British version of American History X & if you've seen both, comparisons are inevitable!
But still these two are so different from each other,be it the location, the timeline or setting-wise.
The film is simple in its way of depicting its events & within a short span it delievered a message that the movie left a great impression of its own.
All the characters were played quite nicely by the actors(who I hear are not all professional actors)...keeping that in mind I'd say director Shane meadows did a fantastic job yet again !
Without a doubt if I make one of those "movies you need to see before you die" lists..this one is an obvious member of such a list.
I hope that describes how much I was moved by the film.
