Review of This Girl's Life (2004) by Aaric L — 02 Sep 2007
What if you felt a strong emotional connection with someone on the first date, only to later find out their employment of choice was - being a naked movie star and being paid to ... (INSERT IMAGINATION HERE)? Would you ever consider dating them seriously, or would you IMMEDIATELY run far,far away in the other direction? Watching this movie will not bring our your inner porn star - ( i.
E. although Juliette Marquis, who plays "Moon" in the movie - looks so fine she could me mistaken for a secret love child of Jesus. Seriously, angels would hit that ...) This is real intellectual movie with cultural substance, and by happenstance, also shows a lot of nudity.
But nudity here does high artistic value, like a Van Gogh Painting, and is very integral to it's overall plot and character development. "This Girl's Life" clearly isn't for everybody, but the movie takes a Feminist Manifesto look at pornography and its residual effect(s) on our society, the American nuclear family, and even women's independent sexual view of themselves.
My favorite scene in the movie was when Roasario Dawson has a huge dinner debate over the classical feminist view of porn with Juliette Marquis and her adult movie star friends. They viciously attack Rosario for her "prudeness" and old-fashioned religious values, but Rosario Dawson gives a great argument about whether the majority of pornography today really has any utilitarian benefit to the woman in the relationship, and if so, whether it truly values her sexuality or demeans her as "tool" for fulfilling the man's sexual fantasy.
She mentioned that pornography is much cooler if it is watched together with your partner, and used for educational purposes ... Definitely a great first date movie for risk takers ...
