Review of Things to Come (1936) by Max M — 08 Jan 2008
I forgot what cinema historian talked about films of particular eras being able to "predict" upcoming events, but this picture is a prime example. Made just prior to WWII and the Blitz of London (this is a British picture), the story seems to be eerily aware of the coming war. However this film's story and themes go beyond that. Spanning decades of endless war where mankind is seemingly pushed back to the dark ages and then manages to leap forward into an advanced technological state, the film not only comments pointedly on the era in which it was released, it manages to seem extremely relevant today.
All that aside the design of the picture is really something special as well.
A truly entertaining and thought-provoking piece of British science-fiction cinema. Seek it out.
