Review of Things to Come (1936) by Brian S — 28 Jul 2009
A masterful work of early science fiction. while it doesn't pack the same kind of punch as Lang's Metropolis, it still manages to incorporate powerful themes like the cost of progress, the effects of war, and political ideology.
the special effects for 1936, though, are still pretty impressive and the orchestral score is also quite enjoyable. for HG Wells, the story seems much too choppy and episodic and the dialogue is passable at best--thus the film is very difficult to get through because continuity and development are so sub-par.
overall a landmark sci-fi film that's better than a lot of B-movies made 15-20 years later, even if it isn't the easiest to watch.
