Review of Thief (1981) by Anna B — 14 Jul 2012
Better than I was expecting. Great physicality and verisimilitude in the heist scenes, and Mann's direction is punchy and energetic (didn't feel like 2 hours). The plot is kinda clichéd and the denouement seems weird because nothing too horrible had happened to Caan's character.
In fact the main character pretty much succeeds in every aspect; he pulls off every job perfectly, and when his employer holds back some money he kills his entire crew with no harm to himself. It's not a huge problem, but it does rob the film of some tension and stakes.
Either way, it works, and I'm not sure why this isn't some revered classic, it seems to fit the mold and the style.
