Review of They Live (1988) by Chris Z — 27 Dec 2010
They Live is a fine movie. It stars professional wrestler Roddy "Rowdy" Piper (whose character is not directly named). The premise is interesting, Some of the subliminal messages that can be viewed when Roddy Piper wears the glasses are hilarious (e.
G. "THIS IS YOUR GOD" is seen when Roddy looks at the dollar bills in his hand.), and it inspired one of the most memorable Duke Nukem lines, I'll give you a hint, it involves a pink, chewey confectionary.
One of my favorite scenes is when Roddy sees a small flying alien device hovering above him, and he utters "Hey little guy, come to show them where I am huh? Not nice!" right before shooting it into pieces.
But They Live is more than just one liners, it's a genuinely entertaining film with great performances. My only complaint would be the overly long fight scene in an alley where Roddy Piper is trying to get Keith David's character to put on the glasses.
I'd reccomend it to anyone who liked John Carpenter's previous classic... nay, legend: Halloween.
