Review of They Came Together (2014) by Sol C — 22 Jun 2014
The film is zany and hilarious. The film is done in the same style as the Zucker Bros. (Airplane, Naked Gun), Mel Brooks, Jim Abrams (Hot Shots) type of films. It is spoofing romantic comedies. They key to this film is don't take it seriously. Once you do that you can enjoy it. In a weird way the film spoofs movies like You've Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, and The Graduate. The framework of Rudd and Poehler telling their story to Kemper and Hader reminded me of the framework of the Billy Crystal film Forget Paris.
Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are very good and funny here. They have a good on screen chemistry. The rest of the cast is funny. There are some funny celeb cameos including Judge Judy, Norah Jones, John Stamos, Adam Scott, Michael Shannon, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Zak Orth's character was hysterical in the scenes that he is in.
