Review of They Came Together (2014) by Gavin P — 21 Sep 2016
They Came Together is an OUTRAGEOUSLY funny spoof of romantic comedies and all of their insufferable clichés, which literally does anything and everything to make you crack up - succeeding in spades! The film is brought to us by comedy genius, David Wain and features an all-star cast of his regular collaborators like Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Michael Ian Black, Ken Marino, and Christopher Meloni; as well as Ellie Kemper, Bill Hader, Cobie Smulders, Jason Mantzoukas, and Ed Helms.
Rudd and Poehler play the obligatory leads who meet upon a chance encounter and soon fall in love, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, plays out normally in this film; and these two are more than game to bring the laughs! From the word go, this movie's comedy is relentless with sight gags, bizarre dialogue, unexpected cameos, fourth-wall breaking, and just overall silliness - but boy, did it work for me! The jokes come fast and furious and I'm positive I didn't catch them all; this type of film really rewards multiple viewings.
It's an incredibly silly, but memorable throw-everything-at-the-wall comedy that had me laughing throughout, which is all I can ask for from such a broad comedy!
