I will dare to say that Helen Hunt is one of the most under appreciated actors in hollywood. But I think that fact has helped her career, as the presence that she brings to the screen is always refreshingly natural and organic. And that is no exception with Then She Found Me, a movie which she writes, directs and stars in. What for many could become about ego Helen turns into one of her most vulnerable performances yet... one that really hits home with the fact that she is willing to show her age.

As a story, this film I think might also end up being underrated and under appreciated for just how subtle and heartfelt it really is. As with most actors turned directors, this movie is directed from an actors point of view. And there are some great performances, specifically from Hunt and Colin Firth. Bette Midler also gives a surprising performance as the long lost mother.

What stands out most for me about this film is that it feels so honest, and that helps it's emotional core to really move you. I can understand that some might not be able to get past the very naked look of Hunt's 39 year old character. And I can understand that some people might just not connect with this film. But for those who fail to see the honesty behind the performances in this film and it's message, they are missing out on a great and inspiring piece of work. Proving that she is one of Hollywood's most humble veteran stars... okay, maybe she's not that old yet. But Hunt is definitely something that most actors should aspire to be. And as a director, she proves that she can bring that to the screen in a very memorable story as well. A must see and a hidden gem.
