Review of Then She Found Me (2007) by Bob V — 08 Dec 2011
Directorial dà (C)but for Helen Hunt who also stars in the leading role. And she does so admirably, turning out some of her best, most nuanced acting of her whole career, and I am counting her Oscar winning turn in "As Good As It Gets".
The main problem this film seems to have is one of tone. One moment we are deep in sitcom humour area, and the next a truly touching, heartfelt scene hits us in the face, and just when we care earnestly for the fate of these people, more flat jokey shenanigans repel us just as quickly.
If this film manages to overcome its handicaps then that is solely due to the magnificent acting performances. Bette Midler is unfortunately guiltiest for revering to sitcom humour most often, but in the scenes where she stays away from the easy yet treacherous laugh, she is truthful and touching. Colin Firth, never a great favourite of mine, manages to endear me on more than one occasion and even Matthew Broderick plays nincanpoop Benjamin to perfection.
