An excellent cast doesn't an excellent movie make ... it didn't even really make a good movie. The problem with this movie is that it is just simply so "meh ..." There is nothing special here to make me suggest or recommend it.

Even fans of the cast -- Helen Hunt, Colin Firth, Matthew Broderick and Bette Midler -- would be at a loss to enjoy this. The four put out good performances but the story just isn't one that asks to be watched and/or enjoyed.

Helen Hunt makes her directorial debut here and I have read that she has worked on this project for several years as a "pet project". I just wonder why? There is an emotional story at the center of the story -- Hunt plays a woman who isn't getting any younger and wants to mother a child (as in carry in her womb for nine months) -- but the movie itself is very Lifetime Television.

Broderick plays her husband; Firth plays the father of one of her school children she is somewhat interested in; and Midler plays Hunt's local-celebrity/talk show host mother who shows up out of the blue to finally be a mother (the backstory here is that Hunt was adopted and knew very little about her birth mother).

Perhaps there is just too-much story here and as-a-result the movie is bogged down and heavy. The movie simply isn't a pleasant watch ... if one watches movies in order to escape from reality this one is simply too depressing and NOT enjoyable.

I really like Helen Hunt and so I wish her well and better luck for next time -- this movie is a "pass".
