Review of The Young and the Damned (1950) by Kyle F — 10 Oct 2008
A powerful and equally disturbing film about poverty stricken youth and the inescapable trouble that follows them. I thinks this film works so well because Bunuel never tries to force us to sympathize with the kids.
We see that they're troubled; Not evil or anything. They have just played the cards that they were dealt. It makes it even more profound when we actually do feel sympathy for these characters. Luis Bunuel's directing in this is perfect.
His use of surrealism never seems forced or show off-y. It only enhances the mood and story. The dream sequence was so beautiful. My jaw dropped when Pedro threw the egg at the screen. One of the coolest things ever put on film.
