Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Sf S — 16 Aug 2010
One of my Top 10 movies of all time, I hadn't seen this in many years and decided to rent it again, in the midst of all the "Mel Gibson, Devil Incarnate" scandal. I remembered correctly: he is BREATHTAKINGLY handsome.
And the script is dense, rich, layered, with lines and scenes that have remained indelibly in my brain since 1982. Linda Hunt's Academy Award-winning performance is (unlike so many) still worthy of the honor.
Signourney Weaver has the perfect combination of cool and intellectually interesting...this is a GREAT film (one of Peter Weir's earliest) . It's still a classic 30 years on...and I think that means it will always be.
The tension between Mel's character and Sigourney's is a text-book example of how it is NOT showing sex or nudity that makes a great sex scene...it's developing the relationship and the tension between the characters -- Hitchcock didn't ahve to show a thing.
..the scene when he comes into the party after curfew and, without saying a word, you can just SMELL his testosterone and adrenalin throughout the theatre! Thinking I need to rent "The Bounty" now! I remember him as being good in that.
