Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Alvin Y — 22 Apr 2011

I like it, and I loved this movie. Is not those kind of movies where you expect more action or romance that most of the time will make you bored or depressed. Well, why it is the one of the best films of 1982, because of this brilliant and wonderfully absorbing film that Peter Weir could only make. All of the actors, Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, and Linda Hunt, did a good job on their performances especially to Hunt who is actually portraying a male character in the film, and yet to win an Oscar for that performance. And why did she won an Oscar, is because her role as Billy Kwan is an important role to the movie, and also a key character to Gibson's character as he goes through hardships and sacrifices to make a story in Indonesia. Another reason why I picked to see this film is because I just found out that this movie was shot on my hometown country Philippines, so I desired to see it, and yet to find out some Filipino actors here in this movie, and I don't get it, why most of the dialogues is in Tagalog not in Indonesian, but anyhow the place, the setting, and the nature feels like we are in Indonesia. Oh! Did I forgot also the chemistry between Gibson and Weaver, yes I say those moments become a changed of life in Gibson's character career because it seems that he doesn't focus more on his job and to what Billy Kwan told him. And at least, for the love of Jesus Christ Almighty, all of the questions, all of the characters, and all of the things left were answered and the characters, we all met them in general, so nothing is missing at the end of the picture, Gibson arrives at the start and departs at the end, so that's pretty obvious.

Whoa! I gotta say more to this film, but certainly, this is truly one of the best and very conventional movies I've ever seen. I could rewatch this movie for many reasons, to see the Philippines again, and once and for all, with meaning and emotion. That's all in my review, so 0.5 stars, JUST KIDDING, OF COURSE 5 STARS!!!!!
