Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Paul P — 11 Jun 2011
Peter Weir brings us a low key and thoughtful look at the civil crisis unravelling in Jakarta in the 60's, with a focus on the journalists covering the events.
Where the easy option could have been taken to make this an action film, the decision to follow a different path makes this film feel right. Mel is on great form as Guy Hamilton, an aussie journalist and his relationship with local cameraman Billy Kwan (Linda Hunt - Brilliant) is both wonderful to watch and heartbreaking come the end. Having Sigourney Weaver on board too really helps and together our trio make this is terrific film.
Visually, this is a lovely film to watch and Weir balances out the complexities of the situation with ease. This is a great film which involves the viewer without passing too many judgements. Terrific work all round....
