Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Brian P — 12 Jun 2014
Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver give solid performances as a journalist and British attache' in this 1983 political thriller set in 1965 Indonesia. A decent look at the chaos and coup against Sukarno is given.
But it is the remarkable performance of Linda Hunt starring as Billy Kwan (yes Hunt played a male character) that steals the show. Not only is Hunt's performance remarkable (she did win the Best Supporting Actress Award that year), the Kwan character is the key figure in developing Gibson's conscience about the events around him and the fate that will be Indonesia.
