Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Joe M — 17 Apr 2018
I struggled to get into this one. I love films about important historical moments and foreign cultures but this one felt emotionally vapid to me. Mel Gilbson and Sigourney Weaver are solid leading actors and Linda Hunt is a good actress (although her playing a man felt strange to me).
The story is interesting but you never get a full taste of the situation or the political figures involved. The film mostly focuses on the white men in the story rather than the real people of Indonesia.
Worth a watch for fans of the genre but certainly a flawed film in my mind.
