Review of The Year My Parents Went on Vacation (2006) by Orlando B — 18 Jun 2008
A whole lot of people "went on vacation" in military ruled Brazil of the 1970's. Secrete Police were everywhere and the generals were fighting the Cold War in earnest in the most repressive way imaginable.
When Mauro's parents have to go into hiding they drop him off at his grandfather's in the suburb of Bom Retiro, Sao Paulo and he ends up being taken in by the Ortodox Jewish community there. For Mauro he might as well be in another planet as he struggles to adapt to foreign customs (fish for breakfast!?!) and even a foreign language.
However, it's the 1970 World Cup in Mexico and as Pele' and Tostao take the field the entire community rallies around the home team. This was a very heartfelt story of growing up, worlds colliding, and soccer.
Go see this movie!!
