Review of The Yakuza (1974) by Augusto A — 02 Sep 2011
This movie kicks ass. I really wasn't expecting Sydney Pollack to direct action so well. The action scenes are perfectly shot and edited. The story is very simple but never uninteresting and the characters never shallow.
A few nice surprises and twists throughout make it even better. It drags a little around the middle point, but the beautiful cinematography, set design and art direction are enough to keep you interested.
Really well made, I particularly loved the way they chose to tell Ken and Kilmer's backstory. This would make a great triple feature with Ridley Scott's Black Rain and Takeshi Kitano's Brother.
