Review of The World of Suzie Wong (1960) by Joshua C — 17 Feb 2008
After this film Suzie Wong became an icon of the so-called 'Wan-Cha girls', a subset of Hong Kong prostitutes. Sure this movie is amusing, but it's at best mediocre. Firstly, the main character, Suzie, is not convincing; her English, though broken, doesn't have any accent and is certainly better than her Cantonese.
We know very little about Suzie and the director doesn't give the audience a chance to see inside her little world. Then there's the superficial and banal treatment of the morality of working as a prostitute to support a kid.
Well, but Suzie is such an eye-candy and it's probably not a bad idea to let her show you around Hong Kong in the 60s.
