Review of The World of Suzie Wong (1960) by Melissa S — 30 May 2008
It was recommended to me while living in Hong Kong that I read this book/ see this movie- prob as I was working with sex worker advocacy organization and the subject matter is about a sex worker in Hong Kong.
I found the movie horribly imperialistic and judgemental morally. Again- I despise the treatment of Asians in Western cimena as victims, especially the women needing to be saved by the white men. Although, again I have a fascination with seeing period depictions of Hong Kong- and from what I can tell did a realistic representation of the shanty towns that lead to the big fire leading to the development of government housing (which I saw as an exhibit at a museum in the New Territories).
The people receommending the movie to me cannot be faulted- as it was good intentions, and maybe I am biased by my internship experience, and readings of Said going back to high school...but why does Western cinema continue to perpetuate these bad stereotypes?
