Review of The Wiz (1978) by Nani V — 02 Dec 2007
I loved this when I was young, and had the crap scared out of me in the scene in the subway. But now, as I grow older, I like this less and less. It's an interesting idea, but Sidney Lumet was not the man to direct this.
He infused too much of his typical "Gritty New York" into it, when I think that he should have had a bit more of that Woody Allen "Beautiful New York" love instead. Oz is supposed to be a magical place, not somewhere you would be terrified of even during the day.
