Review of The Wiz (1978) by Vani S — 14 Feb 2008
Good music, but this is just a strange rendition of the classic story. I mean, I'm all for unique interpretations, but this movie took the "different" a little too far. I think Evillene is scarier-looking than the Wicked Witch of the West.
I thought it was unnecessary to plug Nathan's, and show people dancing around in their underwear subsequent to Evillene's death. The whole movie just looked so rinky-tink and dinky compared to the lavish, beautiful special effects in the original movie from 1939.
And I so did not get why Glinda the Good needed to be surrounded by babies confused by her over-the-top facial expressions when she sang. As far as the music goes, download these babies into your iPod: "Everybody Rejoice/A Brand New Day", "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News", "Home", "Ease on Down the Road", and "If You Believe in Yourself" (either Dorothy's version or Glinda's version).
