Review of The Wiz (1978) by Alec B — 20 Jul 2010
Truth be told I loved it. If people in 1978 wanted to go to the theatre and see a direct copy of the 1939 classic except with African Americans then they are the crazy ones because this stands out as its own classic.
The story is retold of a young woman named Dorothy, a kindergarten teacher in Harlem, whose mother wants to set her up with someone and who is afraid to seek out, goes out into a blizzard to retrieve Toto and ends up in Oz, and runs into Michael Jackson in his only acting role as the Scarecrow, Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man, and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion, all along an urban fantasy world trying to find her way home.
Lena Horne, in her last acting role herself, plays Glinda The Good and along with the rest of the cast, blows everyone away with their talent. Must-see.
