Review of The Witches of Eastwick (1987) by James C — 28 May 2008
The perfect pitch for Jack Nicholson - "we want you to play the devil" and seduce Cher, Susan Sarandon and most importantly Micheele Pfeiffer. What well defined actor would turn down a role like that? Thankfully Nicholson is over the top and understated in all the right places, laying on the charm and giving his character almost complete conviction.
Whilst this is far from Nicholson's best performance he does seem to be getting along with things very well as do the three female leads. Wait till the end for the best bits - perhaps except for Nicholson's CGI devil.
By today's standards it's very lucky that the CGI character only gets a few minutes of screen time. This is imaginative and in places quite creepy and John Williams' score compliments the film's dark undertones perfectly well.
