Review of The Witch (2016) by Mohammad H — 10 Jul 2016
Horror films is not my favorite genre of film. Sure, I do like a well made horror film here and there, but so much of horror these days is pure shock and gore that I usually tend to avoid it. But The Witch is not your typical horror film. It is a supernatural tale of a family that is cursed with witches.
The film takes place in 1600s Puritan times and the titular family is banished from the settlement for their ultra conservative religious beliefs. There they try to build a new life for themselves until strange things start happening starting with the disappearance of the youngest son in the family.
The film is a constant dialing of tension up a notch. From the very beginning, the mood and color pallet of the film suggests ill things to come and by the end of it, the tension is so high that you just cannot wait for the film to be over and I mean it in a good way. Its a terrifically disturbing film that won't give you nightmares but rather leave you disturbed and an odd feeling in your mouth.
If you're a fan of slow burner supernatural films, give The Witch a try, but if you are into more traditional horror films, then The Witch might not be your cup of tea.
