Review of The Wings of the Dove (1997) by Nilanjana R — 21 Mar 2010
Passion, temptation and greed. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards! A young society woman (Helena Bonham Carter) is in love with a journalist (Linus Roache). Her aunt (Charlotte Rampling) discovers the affair and threatens to cut her off without a dime if she sees her lover again.
In despair she concocts a plot to throw her lover and a new, wealthy friend together for a possible romance. The friend has an incurable disease and knows she is dying and is trying to "live" life to the fullest in the time she has left.
She has an open heart and (Carter) plans to have her fall in love with (Roache) and leave him all of her fortune. Then (Carter & Roache) can marry with Aunt Maude's (Rampling) blessing. Class differences, the threat of poverty, and cold-blooded ruthlessness cause heartache and misery for the three main characters.
