Review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) by Nicole H — 20 Aug 2012
Like many places of the world, The British had control of Ireland for quite a long time. There was the Irish Republican Army or Ira, but there were also Freedom Fighters and that's more of what the characters in the film are.
It follows the account of a group of mercenaries, two of them brothers, and one of them is Cillian Murphy who gives a very good performance. The Wind That Shakes The Barley does not hold back for one moment.
It shows not only the violence on part of the British, the senseless brutality, but the emotional effect on the Irish People. As a person of Very strong Irish Heritage, Just about half Irish am I, I find myself completely enthralled with anything that has anything to do with the subject, I may be a bit biased in that sense.
Here is a film that is shot entirely in one of the most beautiful places in the world, the Cinematography will pretty much give you a new found love for the place, and the like able characters as well.
A film that does not focus so much on action which was one of the major flaws of films such as Braveheart, It focuses more on the stories of these characters and the overall quality of the film, I loved it, recommend it, and hope to watch it again, all of the performances were just grand.
