Review of The Wind and the Lion (1975) by Daniel K — 11 Aug 2016
An old favourite of mine from the screenwriter of Apocalypse Now. Loosely based on real events (Candice Bergen's character was actually a man). In some ways it's just a throwaway adventure, but it's made more memorable by the strong cast - particularly Keith and Connery as the titular wind and lion.
" It's a bit of a throwback to the era when Hollywood leading men were cast as mysterious and romantic sheikhs and the Arab world was viewed as an exotic land of adventure. Criticism of whitewashing and fear of Islamic terrorism rather put pay to that genre but, though it wouldn't get made today, this movie stands as a little gem from a bygone era.
