Review of The Wild One (1953) by Vite M — 17 May 2006
I was really disappointed with this boring and pointless film. I'll try to summarize the plot in three sentences. Brando and his motorcycle gang go to a small town, start some trouble with the townspeople and another motorcycle gang.
The townspeople get mad and take the law into their own hands. They beat Brando up and some old guy that noone cares about dies. The end. Basically, it's about a bunch of losers that commit minor crimes and who think they're tough.
There isn't an ounce of character development for anyone; Even Brando is one dimensional. Are we supposed to sympathize for him when his character is so unlikable? The Wild One reminded me of Jack Kerouack's On The Road with the "Beat Generation" and people driving around aimlessly.
If you watch this as a historical piece, then you might learn something. But as entertainment, it truly sinks. Brando should have stuck with Rebel Without A Cause before James Dean had the part. By this I mean that before Brando's presence on the screen, he was doing a screen test that would later come to be Rebel Without A Cause.
It can be found online somewhere or you can buy the new Tennessee Williams DVD collection.
