Review of The Wild One (1953) by Curtis R — 17 Jul 2009
Granddaddy of all Biker films loosely based on the real life invasion of Hollister, California by a biker gang a few years prior. What makes this film so interesting and complex is that it features a likeable anti-hero played by Marlon Brando as the leader of one biker gang versus the villain played by Lee Marvin as the leader of the rival gang with the small unsuspecting town caught in the middle.
This film was banned in many places and was quick to be labeled as a 50's expolitation film by critics but the film has gone from cult classic to mainstream classic over the last fifty years. Did Brando deserve an Oscar for this film? You bet!
