Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Codie E — 04 Mar 2008
Even in the sweating and volatile aesthetic of the film, there is a great acceptance and meditation on mortality at the core of the film that brings a great deal of emotion to the film. And it is this that brings so much added weight to the incredible gunfights and realistic and engaging scenes of drama and humanity between the characters.
The performances are brilliant, particularly from the central pairing of Holden and Borgnine. All of this is explored deeper in Peckinpah's improved director's cut.
