Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Doug B — 29 Jun 2008
A brutal and epic movie that has everything you want in a Western. Bank Robberies, Train-jacking, Betrayals and endless shoot outs. The main anti-hero theme is well executed and the themes of murder, politics, loyalty, punishment and greed are clearly evident throughout.
Peckinpah's astonishing style is way ahead of it's time and although by the end of the film you are exhilarated by the pure adrenaline of the action there is a touch of despondency as this film heralds the end of the Western through the featuring of the Machine Gun and the Automobile.
Alternatively it's because it's so damn good no one ever really needs to make another Western again. This film can never be topped. Truly awe inspiring filmmaking.
