Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Sabrina I — 12 Jul 2011
THE WILD BUNCH paints a picture of the west that is violent, ugly and unpredictable. There's no right or wrong. Good or bad. No sheriff trying to clean up town. Typical western trappings are thrown out the window. The film is about how everyone has a little bit of the devil in them. Anyone can pick up a gun and shoot. Anyone can do the ugly things that are being done in this film. None of the character's are very likeable and you don't know who to root for. Instead the film takes us on a journey to a world that has no limits. Full of blood and madness.
THE WILD BUNCH is technically excellent. There's a couple of great action sequences that hold up very well. The performances are great too. The direction is masterful. The ending is shakes you up and doesn't let you go for days. Overall, THE WILD BUNCH is pure cinema from start to finish. It has lost none of it's shock or power. Truly, a great western.
