Review of The Wicker Man (2006) by Brad G — 14 May 2010
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street. Horror remakes are common practice. Still, itâ??s a bold move to remake the 1973 oogie creepfest The Wicker Man, and itâ??s even stranger coming from relationship manipulator Neil LaBute (In The Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, The Shape of Things).
In this go around, Summersisle is an island populated by evil women and killer bees. Depressed copper Nicolas Cage has some seriously infuriating conflabs with purposefully obtuse broads like Ellen Burstyn, Leelee Sobieski, and Molly Parker; by the end yer really looking for some ungentlemanly behaviorâ?¦good luck on that.
Nothing can touch the vibe of the original. And this remake is definitely too drabâ??and some of that climactic screaming will roll the eyes, but I dig on that Cage rage. I really wanted him to let loose at the end, so obviously the film engaged this viewer.
Solid effort, but nothing will replace the original. VF.
